Betty Harris Lunsford passed away at the age of 71 in Portland, Oregon.
Although born in Jacksonville, Florida, Betty was raised in North Carolina. Later, in 1972, she moved to Oregon where she would go on to live for the remainder of her life. Coincidentally, her husband Jerry also grew up in North Carolina, but the two met in Portland where they went on to be married for 37 years.
Betty was a mother to many; not only her own children. As a childcare provider, many children saw her as a second mom; or even as the mother they never had for those in less fortunate home situations. The neighborhood children would come over often, as they also viewed Betty as a mother figure. She will be remembered for her compassion and selflessness. Her family describes her as someone who would give you strength when you couldn't find strength on your own. Betty loved life and loved so many people during her lifetime. Betty had a dynamic personality and although kind, would not let herself get pushed around. She was set in her ways and knew what she wanted; a very independent spirit.
Betty was a devout Catholic; attending services at Our Lady of Sorrows and the Grotto. She would never miss a Sunday at church. Her hobbies included crafting, reading, fishing and camping. She was an excellent cook and made the best fried chicken this side of the Mississippi (or possibly beyond.)
Betty was preceded in death by her daughter Martha Jane Vance and son-in-law Greg Ockfen. Betty is survived by her husband Jerry Lunsford; children: Michelle Ockfen, Linda (Chris) Lundblad, and Jennifer (Michael) Keith; grandchildren: Andrew Ockfen and his fiancé Macayla, Emily Ockfen, Stacy Smith and Austin Vance, sister Marsha Belk, brother Jimmy Christopher, son-in-law Jim Vance and many nieces and nephews. The memorial service will be a Potluck held at Creston park on 44th and Powell, site B. The Potluck will start at 12:00 pm.
Arrangements under the direction of Gateway Little Chapel of the Chimes, Portland, OR.
